Diamonds Carats and Weight

Generally, the term carat is equated with the size of a diamond, and when the size of a carat goes high, the carat weight too is also supposed to go high. It is the weight of a diamond that determines the carat of the diamond. The weight of the diamond would be about 200 milligrams approximately. Another way of measuring carats is to break it up into 100 points hence three fourth of a carat means something about 75 points.

Diamonds of heavier carat weight are rarely available. The higher the carat weight of a diamond, the more difficult it is to find one because it becomes rarer and rarer. Cost of the diamond takes an exponential curve when the weight of the diamond increases hence a two-carat diamond’s retail price might be startlingly higher than what you spend when you buy two one-carat diamonds.

This is when the color, clarity, fluorescence, brilliance and all the other qualities are same in both the diamonds. One more determinant of the size of a diamond is the way the diamond is cut. The cutting can determine the look of two one-carat diamonds which might be drastically different from each other. Stones, when cut a little flat, will appear bigger.

On the other hand, a stone that is cut deep will look smaller though brilliance and scintillation may be a touch higher than flat cut diamonds. Supposing that you are looking for a diamond that looks bigger, you can buy a stone which is cut flatter as this enhances the appearance of the diamond. For a larger stone or a heavier stone, flat cut diamonds are the best choice. But you cannot obtain more of something as stones that are cut a lot flat will spoil the brilliance and will appear cloudy. Though the Carat weight is considered as one of the most important qualities of a diamond, you need not lose out on other qualities which make a diamond which makes you say you have a two-carat stone with the special diamond pride. This is the process that reduces the brilliance and scintillation.

So,when you are going to buy an attractive one-carat diamond which has a rather high brilliance and scintillation make sure that it suits you both from a personal point of view and an investment perspective. You can enhance your diamonds with baguettes, trillians and other stones on sizes that are both lesser and higher than normal stones.

Hence for your wedding, depending on your budget you can buy two smaller stones which does not cost as much as a single stone double the size. This is a good enough way to buy a ring without an exponential rise in costs!
